부활의 기쁨을 함께 나눕니다. 부활의 메시지는 전도와 선교의 명령으로 연결됩니다. DCMi에 주어진 사명은 모든 민족에게 복음를 전하고 도시와 국가를 변화시킬 리더를 만들어 내는 것입니다.

복음이 어떻게 인간을 바꾸고 그를 리더로 만드는지 주목해 보십시오. 십수년 전 저희 가족이 다니는 Grace Community Church의 교도소 선교팀이 워싱턴주립 교도소에서 채플을 인도했습니다. 이때 35년간 헤로인 중독과 마약 딜러로 살았으나 교도소에서 주님을 만난 George F. Brummell을 만나 친하게 되었습니다. 형을 마치고 출옥한 George는 우리 교회 옆에 보금자리를 정했습니다. 교회는 그를 청소직원으로 채용하여 도왔습니다. 청소를 하면서 독학으로 고졸 검정고시에 합격한 그는 제가 가르치고 있었던 페이스 신학교의 학부과정에 입학했습니다. 그는 4년간의 학업을 통해 대학 졸업장을 받았고, 바로 상담학 석사과정에 진학하여 우수한 성적으로 대학원도 마쳤습니다.

학사와 석사를 공부하면서 그는 청소년 사역센터를 건립하여 주말 마다 불우 정소년을 모아 함께 놀이와 성경공부를 하면서 저들에게 꿈을 심어주었습니다. 나아가 대학원 졸업후 George 는 발군의 실력을 발휘하여 워싱턴 주의 전문 상담사 면허까지 취득하였고 각종 중독자를 위한 전문상담소를 건립하여 수많은 사람들을 중독에서 치유하였고 주님께 인도했습니다. 이 상담소는 번창에 번창을 거듭하여 자신을 제외하고도 몇몇의 전문상담사와 행정직원을 채용한 굴지의 상담소로 발전하였습니다.

그러나 George 는 여기에서 멈추지 않았습니다. 약물과 방종으로 허비해 버린 젊을 시절을 보상이라고 하듯 상담사와 사업가로 눈코 뜰 새 없이 일하면서도 신학 석사와 목회학 박사과정까지 마치고 박사 학위 조차 받았습니다. 그리곤 외부의 도움이 없이는 스스로 일어날 수 없는 무숙자를 위한 교회도 개척하여 사회적 약자를 돕는 목회를 계속해 왔습니다. 끊임없는 학업과 상담사역 및 상담소 운영에 더해 개척교회 조차 운영했던 그는 “너무 무리하지 말고 쉬엄쉬엄 일하면 어떻겠느냐” 는 저의 충고에 이렇게 말하곤 했습니다. “David, 상담이 나의 직업이라면 교회는 나의 모든 것일세. 주님은 나에게 사회적 약자를 돌보는 교회를 세울 것을 명령하셨고 나는 내 생명을 드려 이 일에 순종할 수 밖에는 없네.”

교회가 개척된지도 어느덧 1년 반, 한 달 전 저는 George 의 교회에서 말씀을 전하면서 그가 얼마나 자랑스러웠는지 모릅니다. 누구보다 열정적으로 인생을 살았던 그가 자신의 사명을 다했는지 지난 주말 갑작스런 심장마비로 응급실로 옮겨졌고, 주일 저녁 뇌사 판정을 받았으며, 화요일 밤 그를 사랑하는 몇몇 친구들이 보는 앞에서 의료팀은 그에게서 연명장치를 제거하고 65세의 George를 그의 창조자에게 보내어 드렸습니다. 그의 갑작스런 죽음에 아쉬움이 많은 것은 사실입니다. 그러나 생명을 다해 복음과 약자를 위해 살았던 그는 저의 영혼에 영웅으로 남아 있습니다.

저는 5월초 다시 캄보디아에가 교회리더들과 전도대회를 위한 모임을 갖습니다. 또 저희 팀은 여름내내 구체적 계획을 수립하여 가을부터 네팔에서 차세대 지도자 개발에 착수합니다. 이번 프로그램의 특이점은 교회지도자가 아닌 미래의 국가 지도자를 개발하는 것입니다. 이들이 네팔 사회의 지도자가 될때 네팔은 복음화 될 것입니다. 지난 3월 말부터 4월 중순까지 저의 팀 멤버인 안트와네트는 이디오피아에서 중요한 사역을 마치고 무사히 귀환했습니다. 여러분의 기도와 후원 감사합니다.

캄보디아 사역을 마치고 5월 중순 제가 미국에 돌아오면 사랑하는 친구 George의 장례식을 진행하게 됩니다. 그는 떠났으나 그가 남긴 유산은 저의 영혼 깊이 자리잡고 있습니다.
